My recommendations 2006:
The Letting Go by Bonnie "Prince" Billy

Bonnie "Prince" Billy: The Letting Go
Drag City 9/19/2006

The Letting Go is quite possibly Will Oldham's finest work since 1999's I See a Darkness. The addition of vocals by Faun Fables' Dawn McCarthy and strings softens Oldham's ordinarily spartan arrangements. This album is no sunshine-pop affair, however; Oldham is still quite gloomy. Even his tender ballads tend to be depressing. It's a good thing, though, because few artists do pessimism and resignation better than Bonnie "Prince" Billy.
