My recommendations 2006:
Fox Confessor Brings the Flood by Neko Case

Neko Case: Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Anti- 3/7/2006

Available on Emusic

The best reason I can give for recommending Fox Confessor Brings the Flood is Neko Case's incredible voice. It's just exquisite. It has that silky quality that all the greatest female singers have had: Patsy Cline, Shirley Bassey, Annie Lennox, etc. Beyond just having the ability to sing beautifully, Case is a gifted songwriter as well. Actually, storyteller might be a more accurate description. The songs are affecting because they deal in universal components of human experience. If there's any justice, she will become an icon in Western cultural memory of great female vocalists.

This is a terrific album, but Neko Case is terrific.

I especially love the live album, The Tigers Have Spoken.
