8 things = excuse to start blogging

I have a lot of stuff to blog about that has happened in the past month or so, but I will save it for another post.  Right now, I will respond to the meme that Grumpator has tagged me with to get me to blog again.

This meme asks the blogger, i.e., me, to list 8 random things about himself.  Here we go:

  1. I actually have very traditional ideas about marriage, in a sense.  I am 100% for legal marriage equality, of course, but beyond that my notions of wedlock are pretty conservative.  I think that marriage should, ideally, be permanent and monogamous.  Of course, there are times when divorce is warranted.  However, I think most divorces could be avoided if people actually got to know each other thoroughly before getting married and then didn't give up when things got challenging after getting married.
  2. I used to own a coffin.  How I ended up with the coffin is fairly inconsequential. However, how I got rid of it is much more interesting. I sold it to an acquaintance I had not seen for a number of years previous.  He offered to take it off my hands and I accepted his offer, not really having enough space for it anymore.  Later, I remembered how I had met him years earlier: we had met at a Halloween party where he was dressed as death.
  3. I am not usually squeamish about watching gory movies or surgical procedures on Discovery Health. One thing that I do get squeamish about, however, is feet. I cannot look at foot injuries of any kind. I think this is because my step-brother shot me in the foot with a BB gun when I was a kid.
  4. I share my birthday, August 30th, with Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and John Peel.  I share it with many other celebrities but I feel a particular affinity for these two figures. Shelley because we both have unusual dreams and Peel because we share a passion for discovering new music.
  5. The first album I purchased with my own money was Cosmic Thing by The B-52's.
  6. My elementary school classified me as mentally retarded because I had severe speech and coordination problems and had lots of trouble socializing with peers. To this day, I don't know exactly why.  I was tested for autism but it was eliminated as a possible diagnosis. My mother told me many years later that I had been diagnosed with a form of epilepsy due to absence seizures, but she later denied ever saying it. I don't think I'll ever know the truth about my medical history.  In any case, I overcame most of these obstacles, though I'm still rather clumsy.
  7. I have a pronounced suprainiac fossa, a skull feature not generally found in modern humans. Homo neanderthalensis had suprainiac fossae but not as large as mine.  My Fossil Hominids professors were baffled by it.
  8. Every time I shave, I think about the episode of Diff'rent Strokes in which Arnold buys a defective toy train.  I have no idea how that association got started but it persists to this day.
I'm not tagging anyone because I don't know who's reading my blog anymore.  If you do read this, please feel free to continue the meme and send me a link.

I will have more later, I promise.

Check out Miniluv

Miniluv is a blog and a project devoted to sending a copy of George Orwell's 1984 to everyone in the House and the Senate who voted for the Military Commissions act. I have added a link to my "Other Blogs of Note" sidebar. Check them out and donate a book for the cause!

HOA update

Courtesy of Wil Wheaton, whose link has been woefully absent from my sidebar until today, we have an update on the peace sign wreath situation.

Long story short, reason prevailed. The resident will be allowed to keep the wreath and all fines have been reversed. This goes to show that civilization gradually progresses toward truth, though it can be a painfully slow and bumpy process.

Speaking of Wil, I need to start reading his blog more often. He is a very intelligent individual with great tastes in the finer things in life, such as Heroes on NBC. Also, his role as Wesley Crusher on ST:TNG jump-started my puberty.

Update

You may have noticed that I haven't posted a new podcast in while. Don't worry; the podcast is just on a short hiatus. I will record and post paleunderweight podcast 30 before the end of the year. I think that it will be posted in several parts over several days. This will be a special podcast commemorating the music of 2006.

I am also going to launch another blog in the next few days. It will not replace this one; I will maintain both blogs simultaneously. The second blog will be focused on a narrower subject matter than this one is. Right now, I'm just playing with the format. I will post an announcement when the new blog is ready to be seen.

Sick day

I got up about seven this morning only long enough to send an e-mail to my supervisor and coworkers. I went immediately back to bed and slept another five hours.

I didn't get to listen to a whole bunch of music like I had wanted, but I have listened to some. I've been lying on the couch watching reruns on Lifetime and suffering from an awful sinus headache.

I will post one recommendation today. If I feel up to it, I may respond to the ridiculousness in today's news. Better responses already exist than what I could muster, so I may just skip it.

Lunchtime blogging

When I decided to start recommending new music with a post for every album, I didn't realize how many I would be recommending. The challenge in such an endeavor is thinking of something substantive to say about each album to describe what I like about it. I think I'm succeeding, more or less, in this regard. In any case, I will continue but I will try to break it up with non-music-related posts. I have at least three recommendations to write today, possibly more.

Back to work now.

Breaking the silence

I'm going to take a few moments away from my strict regimen of assal horizontology because it's been too long since I've posted anything substantive.

I am currently listening to The Letting Go by Bonnie "Prince" Billy, which is simply lovely. So far, possibly his best work since I See a Darkness. Yes, that's right - better than Superwolf, even.

Marianne Faithfull announced today that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer, but it was caught in the early stages. I wish her a full and speedy recovery.

The second least likely reunion in all of rock music (after The Beatles) is actually happening! The Sugarcubes are playing a one-off show in Reykjavik. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they decide to tour and come to Phoenix. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Grumpator has tagged me with a meme (though I saw it at Carraigduibh first) which I shall now attempt to complete - without a net!

THE BOOK MEME

  1. Book that changed your life: Coming of Age in Samoa by Margaret Mead. It was the first ethnography I ever read, years before even thinking about getting a degree in anthropology. For me, it has inspired a way of thinking more broadly about culture, a premise for a musical and the name of a band I shall someday form: Margaret Mead & The Samoans.
  2. Book read more than once: The entire Tales of the City series. I read it about once anually. Armistead Maupin has helped me through some difficul times.
  3. Book on a desert island: Tape Delay: Confessions of the Eighties Underground. It compiles a number of interviews that Charles Neal conducted with dozens of artists from the period, such as Marc Almond, Genesis P-Orridge, Mark E. Smith, etc. The inner workings of the musician's mind has always fascinated me.
  4. Book that made you laugh: Non Campus Mentis by Anders Henriksson. A professor compiles a comprehensive history of the world from actual papers submitted by real college and high school students. I was howling at the references to monks taking vows of pottery and to caramelized nuns.
  5. Book that made you cry: The 9/11 Commission Report: Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States. No need to elaborate there.
  6. Book you wish you'd written: A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking.
  7. Book you wish had never been written: Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, only because I was forced to read it both in high school and in college. Classic or not, it's an awful book and I'm not embarassed to say it.
  8. Book currently reading: When Religion Becomes Evil by Charles Kimball.
  9. Book meaning to read: Messiah by Gore Vidal. I've made a couple of false starts in the past couple of months. Eventually I'll finish it.
  10. Tags: Anyone who reads this blog, feel free to continue the meme.

Here's what I've been listening to since Saturday:

  1. Fujiya & Miyagi: Transparent Things
  2. Jason Molina: Let Me Go Let Me Go Let Me Go
  3. Soulwax: Nite Versions
  4. Klee: Honeysuckle
  5. The Whitest Boy Alive: Dreams
  6. Ohsees: The Cool Death of Island Raiders
  7. Erase Errata: Nightlife
  8. Ratatat: Classics
  9. Basement Jaxx: Crazy Itch Radio
  10. Antony & The Johnsons: Antony & The Johnsons
  11. Iron & Wine: Our Endless Numbered Days
  12. Bonnie "Prince" Billy: The Letting Go

Blogging resumes!

I installed my new computer last night so I will now be blogging much more regularly. I am helping Michael move into his new place this weekend so I probably won't have much to say until Monday. Happy Labor Day weekend!

The end of 3DH?

Some of you may have already noticed that I have removed the link to Threedogheads. David decided to discontinue his blog, but hopefully we will hear from him again soon. I will add a link to his new blog as soon as I am notified of its whereabouts.

Catching up

I have been woefully remiss in my posting lately. Would you believe my dog ate my posts? No? How about... I haven't posted because of national security concerns? Er, um... terrorists! Yes, that's it - if I don't get lazy about posting periodically, the terrorists win!

You're not buying any of this, are you?

Ok, the truth is I've been tired and lazy. I promised the next installment of Albums That Loved Me Back several weeks ago - that is still forthcoming, I assure you. I also promised a few words about Richard Butler's new album. Short version: I love it, it's better than any of his work with Psychedelic Furs or Love Spit Love, it's a sonic mosaic, yadda yadda yadda. Buy it.

It's not that I haven't gotten anything done recently. I applied for five full-time positions in the ASU libraries last week. The one I really, really want is a specialist position in my current department which I am thoroughly qualified for, but I have to compete with two other colleagues that are similarly qualified. Four others are at the soon-to-open downtown campus library. I will also be happy if I get one of these.

I am planning to take my GRE in early August so I can apply for U of A's MLS program before their September deadline. Wish me luck!

I finished the six-day course of Medrol my doctor prescribed for my headaches but I am still experiencing side effects - I sleep fitfully and I am always hungry! It's frustrating, but it will pass. I'm still taking the Skelaxin when needed, which isn't as often as it was last week. I managed to go without it all day Saturday, but I started getting a mild headache again yesterday, so I started taking it again.

Last night I didn't sleep very well at all. I was so tired at work this morning that I forgot to put the caraffe under the coffee maker while it was brewing. I didn't notice until it had made a horrible mess. Oh well, I am prone to that sort of thing even when I am perfectly well-rested.

Thom Yorke's solo album is out tomorrow! I am drooling in anticipation. Whee!

I have decided not to put the podcast on hiatus quite yet. I still have more to give, so why not? I enjoy doing it. I might take weeks off more frequently though. I guess I'll play it by ear.

Here's what I have been listening to today:

  1. Todosantos: Aeropuerto
  2. Shearwater: Palo Santo
  3. Booka Shade: Movements
  4. The Tango Saloon: The Tango Saloon
  5. Stuart A. Staples: Leaving Songs
  6. James Figurine: Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake
  7. Karl Blau: Beneath Waves
  8. The Twilight Singers: Powder Burns

I could have been a stapler, could have been a duck

Thanks to David at threedogheads for bringing it to my attention that it's Nick Drake's birthday!

Tonight, if you are fortunate enough to live in my house (or any of the adjacent houses), you will be treated to my very special nude backyard tribute performance of Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon in their entirety featuring improvised dancing, my signature falsetto and stream-of-consciousness alternate lyrics!

6th mensiversary

Today Michael and I celebrate our sixth mensiversary (it's a word; Google it). Actually, we are celebrating it tomorrow night because I have a paper due tomorrow afternoon that I haven't started yet. For that reason, I don't have time to blog much about it right now. I have a lot to say about why I feel so fortunate that Michael is in my life, but alas, it will have to wait until I finish my paper.

Here is my listening for today:

  1. Morrissey: Ringleader of the Tormentors
  2. The Flaming Lips: At War With the Mystics
  3. Band of Horses: Everything All the Time
  4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Show Your Bones
  5. Christian Death: Catastrophe Ballet
  6. Death From Above 1979: You're a Woman, I'm a Machine

Eyeballs, eyeballs, eyeballs, eyeballs, eyeballs everywhere!

Friday morning a co-worker called in sick, confirming what we all had suspected - pinkeye. I briefly considered making an appointment with Dr. Hottie for that afternoon just in case. I decided to file it under "Wait and See" and enjoy the day. We were having a party for a student worker who was leaving us forever for a great new job. No time for fretting about viral conjunctivitis - this food wasn't going to eat itself.

On my way home on the bus, my right eye started stinging intermittently. Oh crap, I thought. I called Dr. Hottie's office on my cell. They could see me if I could get there before three. I was relieved. Even if I had pinkeye, I thought that I could start the antibiotic drops that afternoon and no longer be contageous by the next evening. I was not going to miss Cirque du Soleil for anything.

I stood on the scale, turning my head away. I didn't want to know how much weight I had gained.

"216," the nurse said. Apparently I had neglected to inform her of my plan - weight loss through denial.

I was half-asleep on the table when Dr. Hottie came in. He examined my eyes. No pinkeye. My irritation was due to allergies. Relief.

We discussed the side effects of my anxiety meds. I told him that sometimes it felt like there wasn't enough gravity. He switched me to Lexapro. He gave me months worth of samples. I was grateful to not have to pay for any prescriptions, as I am pretty much broke until graduation.

Later that evening, I hastily recorded the interstitial bits for my podcast. I set up my iPod to play the tracks and interstitials in the right order and began recording it with Polderbits. I laid down on the couch to watch the first few episodes of The Simpons, season seven, with commentary.

I woke up at about 2:30 with Sideshow Mel staring me in the face. I knew that my podcast was done recording, but editing would wait. I dragged myself into bed and went back to sleep.

In the morning, I edited the podcast and posted it to the web. I played WoW for an hour. I threw on some shorts and a t-shirt, wet down my Flock-of-Seagulls hair, hopped on my bicycle, and rode to Sonic for some lunch. Listened to the podcast on the way. The sun and breeze felt good on my legs. Came back, took Missy to the park. I steered clear of the couple with their four children. Missy loves getting attention from strangers and I didn't want to be there all day.

While I was getting ready to jump in the shower, Michael texts me. "What r u wearing?"

"Right now or at cirque?"

"At cirque, silly!"

"Nothing but a jockstrap!" I reply cheekily.

On the way to Cirque du Soleil, I decided to have a little April-Fool's fun with Michael. I managed to convince him that Jenny and I had gotten married five years ago so she could get on my medical insurance and that I hadn't told him until now because I didn't know whether he'd still want to be with me knowing I was married. He bought it completely. I couldn't keep up the charade for too long; it was getting harder to add outlandish details without laughing.

I called Jenny and left a message detailing my prank on her voice mail. She called back moments later to congratulate me.

"Tom Waits is coming next month!" she said.

"Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!" I replied. "When?! Where?! How much?!"

"April Fool's!"

I guess I had it coming.

Cirque was fabulous in so many ways. Michael and I talked about it for the entire trip back to his place. While he packed his overnight bag, we discussed our plans for the evening. We were both craving nachos, so we settled on Hamburger Mary's.

When we arrived, we were horrified to find that it wasn't Hamburger Mary's anymore. "What the fuck is Burger Betty's?!" I exclaimed. It was packed. Tim was sitting at a table by the door, collecting the cover charge. I improvised. "How about Pookie's?"

Michael had never been. It was just down the street. We arrived, surprised that even Pookie's had changed its name - to Miggie B's. Oh well. We were starving. Our host informed us that a former waiter just bought the place, hence the name change. Same menu, same people - just a new look and a new name.

We scarfed down the nachos so quickly that we weren't hungry anymore by the time the burgers arrived. We asked our waiter to box them up, I paid and left a handsome tip, and we left.

We rented Crash. Not the Cronenberg film. The new one - the one that beat Brokeback Mountain for Best Picture. Pretty good movie. Better than I was expecting. I still preferred Brokeback Mountain. We stayed up for a while watching TV with John.

This morning Michael went and got us coffee while I was still in bed. He left fairly early because he has a lot of crap to get done. Now I am blogging and procrastinating about getting on my bike.

100th post

This morning I perfected the synergetic use of the snooze button and the whore's bath.

Then I discussed Phil Spector's impending murder trial with a tech guy at work.

"Did you know he pointed a gun at Leonard Cohen while recording Death of a Ladies' Man?" I said.

"He actually fired at Lennon," Kirk replied.

"What could Leonard Cohen have possibly done to piss him off that much? He's a Zen Buddhist!"

Kirk grunted in agreement. I thought about David's hobby of quoting Smiths lyrics. "...and the pain was enough to make a shy, bald Buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder..."

The logical next step was to enjoy the best baklava of my life, courtesy of Andre, and listen to Slowdive's Souvlaki at the same time. So I did. Now I am blogging about whatever pops into my head until my next class. I don't feel like going, but I will because I have to write a short paper on the video that will be shown in class.

Today's aural delights:

  1. Neko Case: Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
  2. Deerfoof: The Runners Four
  3. The Arcade Fire: Funeral
  4. Slowdive: Souvlaki
  5. Meat Beat Manifesto: 99%
  6. My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult: 13 Above the Night

Feel the love!

I would like to take a moment to thank David, creator of Three Dog Heads, for his recent praise of this blog. It comes as a true compliment, and once you read his blog, you'll see why. In two days, I have become a fan of his work, his wit, his unabashedly truthful perspective, and his commitment to promoting literacy. You can certainly expect to see frequent references to his posts in the future.

The following albums have burrowed into my frontal lobe today, displacing all knowledge of Teotihuacan "thin orange" style pottery:

  1. Espers: Espers
  2. Chihei Hatakeyama: Minima Moralia
  3. The Caretaker: Additional Amnesiac Memories
  4. The Cramps: Look Mom No Head!
  5. Xiu Xiu: Fabulous Muscles
  6. Björk: Homogenic

Schadenfreude ist die schönste Freude (denn sie kommt von Herzen)

Everyone knows by now that our VP accidentally (we assume) shot someone in the face. Let me say, first, that I wish Mr. Whittington a speedy recovery. While I disapprove of his sinful Republican lifestyle, nobody deserves to get shot on the face. I can only pray that he will seek conversion therapy and begin to live a clean, morally upright liberal life. It's never too late, Harry!

As for Cheney, however, schadenfreude can only begin to describe how I feel. Luckily, I am not alone. Mr. Sun has some beautiful commentary on this matter. (Thanks to Grumpator for the tip.)

Today's rotation:

  1. echohce: echohce
  2. Greg Davis and Sebastian Roux: Paquet Surprise
  3. Bel Canto: Birds of Passage
  4. Tears for Fears: The Seeds of Love
  5. Material: Secret Life
  6. Spain: She Haunts My Dreams
  7. Revolting Cocks: Beers, Steers & Queers

Catch-up

This week I haven't had much time or energy for blogging. The semester began Tuesday and it seems that I have had next to zero free time since then. However, I need to blog regularly or I'll lose momentum.

Sugarfoot has become very interested in my mouse and how it moves the cursor on the screen. I now have to lock her out of the room if I want to get anything done. She has also started doing a kind of hermit crab impression with sheets of newspaper, which is just as cute as swatting at a two-dimensional arrow on my monitor, but less likely to disrupt my productivity.

I am going to try to get all my reading and homework done for all of next week by Saturday afternoon. Michael has been gone the last two weekends, so this will be our first opportunity to spend the weekend together in three weeks. Hopefully we will finally get to see Brokeback Mountain Sunday morning. We tried to go three weeks ago but it was sold out at the one theater showing it. I hope we can also watch Kill Bill Vol. 2, which I gave to Michael for Christmas.

I may also decide to go to Torah study and services at Temple Beth Israel Saturday morning. This will most likely depend on a) how much reading/homework I will have finished and b) whether I can drag myself out of bed early enough.
