"If you want to be free, there is but one way; it is to guarantee an equally full measure of liberty to all your neighbors. There is no other." - Carl Schurz

"The saddest epitaph which can be carved in memory of a vanished liberty is that it was lost because its possessors failed to stretch forth a saving hand while yet there was time." - George Sutherland

My recommendations 2006:
The Greatest by Cat Power

Cat Power: The Greatest
Matador 1/24/2006

Available on Emusic

For years, Chan Marshall seemed to be on the path to self-destruction that so many gifted singer-songwriters before her have taken. The Greatest is evidence that she has turned a corner and is beginning to emerge from the abyss. To be sure, this album is often as dark as her previous efforts. However, her songs contain a hope that her work has often lacked. Songs like "Lived in Bars" address her problems frankly, but show that she is beginning to draw strength from adversity. Moreover, The Greatest is not just her most-fully realized and fleshed out album. It's also, as the title suggests, truly her greatest.
